I just returned from spending the weekend up at the Custer Sportsmans Club in Custer, WA. It’s only a few miles south of the Canadian border. Just across I5 is Birch Bay and my wife and I have spent some time there in summer, so she wanted to come along. So we made a weekend out of it and brought the RV. CSC has 7 RV hookups in the parking lot and is a pretty decent facility with covered benches, multiple ranges on the same firing line, and action bays in the back. I woke up early, made some breakfast and headed out to help setup for the match. Steve Becker, match coordinator, had some interesting stages in mind for us and one included shooting from a moving vehicle.

We got the stages setup and started the match right around 10AM. We at Aero Precision donated a few prizes and I think all the competitors were excited. After the shooters meeting, they randomly drew out the numbers and the winners got their prizes. We then split into three squads and started the match. The great weather we’d been having in the Pacific Northwest held for the day, as it was sunny and in the high 60′s/low 70′s for the day.

The stages were a lot of fun, though I had a lot of magazine-related malfunctions throughout the day. I had several double feeds as well as failures to load. The magazines I was using are new and got some sand in them from the earlier stages, so I think that contributed to the failures. I’ve broken them down, cleaned them out and hit them with some silicon lube to see if that will improve their reliability. Even with the malfunctions, I had a great time with some great people and got to do some things I hadn’t done before. Shooting from the back of the trailer while being towed by the Gator was definitely the highlight of the day. Numerous competitors were commenting on how much fun it was. Steve was expecting that stage to take the longest but our squad went through it pretty quickly. All in all, it was a great day!

I finally got all the parts together for the lightweight build. I finished the lower last weekend but didn’t have quite enough time to get to the upper. I managed to steal some time away this weekend and put it together. Barrel is a Palmetto State Armory 1 in 7 twist, pencil profile chambered in 5.56. Bolt carrier is a JP enterprises low mass operating system because I like the reduced felt recoil it offers. I went with a Syrac adjustable gas block to fine-tune the gas system. Muzzle device is a Kaw Valley Precision linear compensator. I like the idea of a muzzle device that would put the noise and muzzle blast out in front of the shooter. While I haven’t gotten to the range with it yet, I think this build will be exactly what I was hoping for.

The goal for this build was to put together an AR15 that would be good for first-time shooters, women and children to use. I wanted something that would be lightweight, have reduced recoil, and wouldn’t be too loud for the shooter either. Look for some pics from the test fire this coming weekend!

I’m just about finished with the parts for the lightweight build. I headed out to Puyallup, WA for the Washington Arms Collector’s gun show this weekend and it was nice to see that parts and ammo were available. Some of it was decently priced, others still higher than it used to be. But at least it was available. Accessories were plentiful and I managed to pick up a Magpul MOE stock and trigger guard to finish off my lower receiver. I took my niece and her boyfriend with me as well. They hadn’t been to one yet, so I decided it would be a good time to take them. My niece has taken a liking to my M&P 22 pistol and found one at the show, but hasn’t quite saved up enough yet to get it. Hopefully, this will serve as motivation for her to save up and get one so she doesn’t have to borrow mine! Once home, I put the parts on and took it outside to get some pictures. Look for the rest of the build this week and test fire this weekend!

Magpul decided to do a limited edition run of PMAGS as a memorial to him and donate all the proceeds to a trust fund for the Noveske children. I finally got mine in last week. As of this post, there are still some available.

I received some more packages on Friday for the lightweight build. Some goodies from BCM and Battle Arms Development to finish off the build. I like the BCM Mod 0 grip for smaller hands and the reduced angle as well. I’m a big fan of their improved charging handle and I also needed a .625 gas block for the pencil barrel on this build. The Battle Arms Development Ambidextrous Safety Selector is staple of any AR lower I put together and I really like their short-throw version.

I also got the COP upper and lower ready to get hydro-dipped. I’m heading down today to drop it off at Northwest Hydroprint in Montesano, WA and I can’t wait to see what it looks like dipped in Kryptek Highlander!

We’re going to do a couple of AR15 builds and the first one is a lightweight build. I picked up a pile of parts last week and another few boxes should be in today. The barrel is a pencil profile, chambered in 5.56, with a 1 in 7 twist from Palmetto State Armory. I’m going to use JP Enterprises new captured recoil spring and their low-mass carrier to help reduce recoil, though I do have a standard carrier in case I run into any reliability issues. The lower parts kit is made up of some spare parts from a friend (Thanks Rich!) since it is still had to find parts. Trigger will be the QMS from ALG Defense and the springs are from JP. Upper receiver is our midlength COP. I’ve got a bunch of goodies heading in from BCM and Battle Arms Development to round it off. For a muzzle brake, I want something that will help reduce muzzle rise, while directing noise away from the shooter.

The idea for this build is to make a light, easy to shoot rifle that first time shooters, women and children could easily use to get into the sport. Right now, the plan is also to get it hydro dipped in Kryptek Highlander and then have the rest of the furniture in FDE to somewhat match. Stay tuned for more updates!

So the guys from X-products came up with a nickname for our prototype AR10 upper. They called it “Bigfoot” and I think it fits on a few levels. First, we’re in the Pacific NorthWest where Bigfoot is supposed to live. Second, it’s an AR10 so it is a larger caliber than a lot of AR’s. Third, with the X-products 50-round drum on it, it does look like it has a big foot!

… and I had my stuff loaded up, ready to head out to a “local” competition. Here in the Pacific Northwest, “local” can mean anything between a 30 minute drive and a couple of hours. It was 34 degrees outside when I loaded up and it didn’t warm up much at all as I drove a little over two hours north to the Custer Sportsmen’s Club in Custer, WA. When I got there, the weather wasn’t too bad. A slight drizzle but still cold. I helped setup the match and we started right around 10am. The stages were a lot of fun and one stage did involved all 3 guns, while another stage involved two bays. One bay with shotgun and then a quick sprint to the next bay to pick up your rifle and shoot in the next bay. As for the weather, we had rain, then snow and towards the end the sun even came out for a few. It was a great day with good people and I can’t wait for the next match!

Day started with some light rain

And then it turned into snow

And then the sun even came out for a bit
